WOW!

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

I’m compelled by sheer childhood enthusiasm to showcase this piece of  technological awesomeness. Back when I was a kid my grandfather had a Casio calculator watch that I dreamed of one day donning. Fast forward some 20 years and I’m once again obsessed by the same idea. Hex has developed a silicone wristband for the Ipod nano. For 25 bucks you’ll be able to fashionably access all of the Ipod functionality as well as embody a time traveling Batman type persona. WOW!

Street Art

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Street art is any art developed in public spaces — that is, “in the streets” — though the term usually refers to unsanctioned art, as opposed to government sponsored initiatives. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, stencil graffiti, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing and street installations. Typically, the term street art or the more specific post-graffiti is used to distinguish contemporary public-space artwork from territorial graffiti, vandalism, and corporate art.

As defined by Wikipedia.

It’s a tough sell when someone asks you about what business you’re in. I say, say it loud. Street Art is alive and well and on the verge of splashing into a gallery near you. Street Art is Legitimate. For the last 2 decades and from recent installations in major museums, Street Art has emerged as a new and flourishing genre. The ICA Museum in Boston had a 3 month long exortation of Sheppard Fairey. MOCA LA has given the reigns to renowned curator of all things street art Jeffrey Dietche. Legitimizing that which once thought as vandalism has created an industry that is honest, socially relevant, and fun. THe stuffiness that comes with the enjoyment of art has been shed and accessible, casual, powerful art is sweeping the scene. We have a shot to provide what they have in other big cities. If you think its worth the time give us a shout……

here are a few articles to read and digest. MIH y’all.

More late nights in the LAB.

Working on new projects. Expanding upon abilities and pushing boundaries. Apologies to Dr. Fayo for the mess and blaring internet radio.

Katsuhiro Otomo

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

During a Jr. High summer vacation I stumbled upon the movie Akira, lost in obscurity among the other films on the “special interest” shelf at Block Buster. Rented the film and watched it as many times as humanly possible in a weekend. Although initially struggling with the plot, the art blew my mind. It was nothing like anything one expected from a Manga film at that time, void of wide eyed vixens amidst a slew of bloody fight scenes. It was smart, science fictional, grossly imaginative and just cool. Some time later I would come to obsess over the Akira comic books, written and illustrated by Otomo himself. I spent hours picking apart every panel of each book. Otomo’s figures teach the power of simplicity, while the attention to overall detail is overwhelming and stunning.

Beside Akira, Otomo has produced and been a part of an abundance of projects ranging from animation, graphic novels and even live action films. Take the opportunity to research this master of illustration and storytelling. Below is a link to a 4 part interview with Otomo, taking place after the release of Akira. Genius.
